As many as 36 prisoners lodged in Tihar jail died in 2013, including Afzal Guru, the Parliament attack convict who was executed and Ram Singh, an accused in the December 16, 2012 rape case who allegedly committed suicide inside jail premises.
"The Tihar jail has reported 36 cases of prisoners' death," Director General (Prisons) Vimlaa Mehra told reporters here today.
Other than Ram Singh, another woman prisoner had committed suicide in jail number 6. One inmate who had gone to attend a court hearing in Ghaziabad was killed in a shoot out while one person died in hospital following a scuffle among inmates, she said.
Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar jail premises in February last year. He was convicted of plotting the 2002 attack on the Parliament and was sentenced to death.
Ram Singh, one of the prime accused of the December 16, 2012 Delhi gang rape case was found hanging in jail premises in March last year.
According to Mehra, the magisterial inquiry in his death has revealed that it was a case of suicide and "there is no doubt in that".
