Four men were arrested here for allegedly attempting to free their gang member from police custody while he was being presented in a court here, police said today.
The arrested have been identified as Pankaj, Nizam, Ravi and Vikas Dabas, all members of a gang led by a "local criminal" Neeraj Bawana, Ravindra Yadav, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), said.
Police recovered three country-made automatic pistols of .32 bore & 18 live cartridges besides a car. Pankaj, who is a history sheeter, is allegedly involved in 20 cases.
Yadav said police had an information that the Neeraj Bawana gang will try to help Vikas Laggarpuria, who is involved in a murder case, to escape. "On March four, we arrested them when they arrived at Dwarka courts to execute their plan. We encountered them and asked them to surrender.
"All of a sudden, one person sitting near the driver came out and tried to fire at the Head Constable. Meanwhile two others also tried to escape by brandishing their pistols," Yadav said.
The official said the gang had planned to escape with Laggarpuria when he was to be produced in the court from the lockup of Dwarka Court.
"They had planned that when Laggarpuria will be produced by one or two constables, he would push them and escape from custody and take position in the car already parked in front of the main gate of the court," police said.
