Driver Kuldeep Singh (32) was allegedly shot dead by policemen when he jumped a check post in the wee hours of Thursday, police said today.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Inderjit Singh and constables Rajinder Singh, Bhuma Singh and Gurmeet Singh were booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, they said.
The accused initially claimed they fired in self-defence after being shot at by Kuldeep, whom they identified as a drug peddler, and his accomplices.
Later, they stated that Kuldeep was "accidentally" shot when a bullet rebounded off the truck's mud-guard and pierced the windshield.
Police lodged an FIR against the policemen at the intervention of senior police officers.
