4 Indians arrested for drug smuggling in Malaysia

Customs director at the Kuala Lumpur International airport, Badaruddin Mohamed Rafik, said the drugs seized from the possession of the four Indians was worth USD 564,096 (Malaysian Ringgit 1.73 million).

The four suspected drug smugglers were arrested in different cases over three days last week and have been remanded to 14 days of custody for investigation.

"So far this year, 19 Indian nationals were arrested for attempting to smuggle 111.58 kg drugs worth RM 10.54 million (USD 3.4 million)," he told a press conference here today.

In the latest four cases from December 21 to 23, the suspects allegedly attempted to smuggle 28.45 kg of drugs in their luggage or backpacks, the official said.

Among the four was a 40-year-old housewife who is alleged to have tried to sneak in 11.85 kg of ketamine.

The other three suspects included a 38-year-old technician from Mumbai, a 27-year-old man from Gaya and a 54-year-old businessman who is said to have entered the country eight times so far this year.

The largest number of alleged smugglers arrested this year were Nigerians (20) followed by Indians (19).
