4 injured during eviction drive in Bhubaneswar

Four persons including two women devotees of ISKCON temple here were injured during an eviction drive carried out in the city today, police said.

Trouble broke out when the eviction squad attempted to demolish a "Samadhi Peeth" near the International Society for Krishna Consciousnesses (ISKCON) temple, allegedly installed on encroached land near the National Highway-16 at Nayapalli here.

A group of devotees and locals pelted stones at the police and enforcement officials, who were removing the encroachments.

The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the agitators.

The eviction drive was jointly carried out by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) along with National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

BMC authorities said that the BMC had issued show-cause notices to the ISKCON temple and a nearby hotel two days ago in connection with waterlogging problem on NH-16.
