CBI has arrested four Income tax personnel in Kolkata, including an officer, in an alleged bribery case and claimed to have recovered over Rs 6 lakh in cash during searches in this connection.
According to the premier investigative agency, Income Tax Officer (ITO) Netai Nandy, Office Superintendent Biplab Kumar Chanda, Senior Tax Assistant Debabrata Ghosh and Tax Assistant Sakshi Gopal Debnath were arrested yesterday in the West Bengal state capital as they were allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 60,000.
CBI had registered a case against the ITO and Chanda, who works in the office of Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS), Kolkata, under IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act following a complaint from a Chartered Accountant that the accused were demanding a bribe for issuing a certificate for lower deduction.
CBI claimed that Nandy and Chanda were arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively.
The two others -- Ghosh and Debnath -- were arrested for taking their share of Rs 1,000 each from Chanda.
CBI claimed that searches at the residence of the ITO led to recovery of Rs 6,50,000 in cash besides documents pertaining to his various bank accounts and a locker key, which is being scrutinised.
All the accused were produced today before the Special Judge, Bichar Bhawan, Kolkata, and remanded in judicial custody for seven days.
