4 private shipyards among 9 shortlisted for building aircraft

The government has shortlisted nine shipyards including four owned by private players for building the next indigenous aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy, at an estimated cost of around Rs 60,000 core.
The naval headquarters has written a letter seeking expression of intent to the shortlisted shipyards, who will have to respond by July 21.
Besides the state-run shipyards, the four private shipyards L&T, Pipavav, ABG shipyard and Bharti shipyard.
The development came after a high-level study group, headed by Assistant Controller of Carrier Project Rear Admiral Surinder Ahuja, was set up to carry forward the project for the aircraft carrier that will have a displacement of 65,000 tonnes.
