A 40-year-old married woman was allegedly shot dead near a park in the Delhi University campus by her paramour, who had married another woman and wanted to get rid of her, following which the accused was arrested today.
The incident came to light last night when the body of Anjali Devi, bearing a bullet wound on her head, was found inside the car of her friend, Naveen Uppal (30), who allegedly made up a story, claiming she shot herself dead and he was about to commit suicide, police said.
After sustained interrogation, Uppal confessed to the crime. He was arrested this morning under charges of murder and illegal possession of firearms and presented before a court which sent him to two days in police custody, DCP (North) Madhur Verma said.
Anjali was a mother of two children and lived with her family in Outer Delhi's Rohini. She was allegedly involved in an extramarital affair with Uppal for around the past seven years.
Earlier this month, Uppal got married to another woman and wanted to get rid of Anjali, for which he had called her to the Vishwavidyalaya metro station here yesterday, for settling the matter. The two even have a child, who was accepted by Anjali's husband, police claimed.
Around 4.30 PM yesterday, Anjali sat in Uppal's car and both drove towards Yamuna Expressway, where they had a heated argument. Naveen had asked Anjali to bring her phone and wanted to delete data which he feared Anjali could show to his wife. But Anjali did not bring her phone.
It also came to light that Uppal, who is into footwear business and lives with his family in northwest Delhi' Srinagar, had convinced Anjali that his family got him married forcefully, which turned out to be a lie. He had also borrowed around Rs 5 lakh from her in the past two years, police said.
After the incident, Uppal first called his uncle and
confessed to the crime. Then he deleted all call logs from his mobile phone, police said.
Next he called up Anjali's sister and told her that Anjali had shot herself dead and he was going to commit suicide too. By then, he had reached near the Hindu College and also disclosed his location.
He kept sitting inside the car till the time Anjali's relatives dialled 100 and a police team found his car near the park, police said.
In the initial stages of the probe, Uppal disclosed about his affair with Anjali and other personal details but maintained that she had killed herself with the gun before he could stop her.
He was subjected to intensive interrogation during which he broke down. He later told police that he had procured the country-made gun from UP's Faizabad in early April and often texted Anjali threatening that he would kill himself.
Even last evening, he showed the gun to Anjali and threatened to kill himself before he changed his mind and shot her dead instead, police said.
The police have recovered photographs, text messages and other evidence from Anjali's phone, the weapon of offence and Uppal's phone too has been sent to a lab for analysis. His relatives were questioned and further investigation is underway, police said.
