415 cartons of liquor seized in UP

As many as 415 cartons of liquor, said to be smuggled from Haryana for the upcoming Holi festival, were seized in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts, the police said today.
Around 250 cartons of liquor, worth Rs 20 lakh, were seized from a tractor-trolley during an alleged encounter with smugglers last evening in Shamli district, a police official said.
A case under the excise act has been registered against the 11 alleged smugglers, who managed to escape, the official said.
In Muzaffarnagar, two persons were arrested last evening after 165 cartons of liquor were recovered from their truck, an officer said.

The accused have confessed to smuggling the liquor from Haryana for supplying it in Uttar Pradesh during the upcoming Holi festival, he added.
