Forty-seven bonded labourers were rescued from two brick kilns in Maandal of Rajasthan's Bhilwara district following intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
NHRC filed an FIR under Section 379 of the IPC and Section 4/21 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 against 'Bajrang Brick Kiln' at Duvala in Maandal police station area for operating without permit.
"In case of 'Jaishree Brick Kiln' in the same area, it was found that the owner, though having a valid licence from the Government of Rajasthan, was not maintaining records as per provisions of labour laws.
"The labourers were being paid only living expenses and not proper wages. The district officers concerned were asked to take legal action against the owner of the brick kiln," said the Commission.
NHRC had intervened in the matter after it received a complaint from an NGO about migrant bonded labourers from Rajasthan and Bihar working in Jaishree brick kiln following which a three-member team of the Commission led by the Joint Registrar (Law) conducted an on-the-spot enquiry.
The team while conducting an enquiry at Jaishree brick kiln also made a surprise visit to nearby Bajrang brick kiln.
