48 per cent polling in Charkhari by-election

Polling for the Charkhari assembly by-election passed off peacefully in Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh today with 48 per cent voters exercising their franchise.
There was no untoward incident reported from anywhere and the voter turnout was 48 per cent, an election office here said.
As many as eight candidates including four independents and a woman are in the fray, prominent among them being Akhil Rajpoot (BJP), Urmila Devi (SP) and Ram Jeevan (Congress).
Counting of votes will be taken up on April 15, he added.
By-election on the seat was necessitated after the seat fell vacant in January this year following disqualification of sitting SP MLA Kaptan Singh after his conviction by a local court on murder charges in a 13-year-old case.
Kaptan Singh was elected from the constituency in September by-elections last year after the seat was vacated by BJP leader Uma Bharti, who was elected to Lok Sabha from Jhansi parliamentary constituency.
