5 cricket betting rackets busted, 23 held in Delhi

Amid the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Delhi police today claimed to have busted five betting rackets in different parts of the city, arresting 23 people and recovering Rs five lakh in the last few days.
North west district police on Sunday arrested two members of Dimpy gang and recovered Rs 4.44 lakh during a raid at their Subhash Place hideout, police said.
Those held have been identified as Parveen Khurana and Amit Jain, while kingpin of the gang Sunil alias Dimpy managed to escape along with his other associates, said DCP (north west) Vijay Singh.
Two line box of 23 and 14 phone lines for booking bets on phone, 44 mobile phones and three LCDs with set-top boxes, as well as a cash counting machine were seized during the raid, he said.
The gang had rented the place at Rs 1.5 lakh per month and secured the front area of the building with CCTV cameras which helped Dimpy and his associates to escape during the raid, he added.
In a drive against betting rackets that have become active during the IPL season, south Delhi police arrested 21 bookies and recovered over Rs 67,000 from them as stake money, said DCP (south) Ishwar Singh.
Two rackets were foiled in raids in KM Pur area on Sunday, while yesterday two more rackets were busted with arrest of 16 people from Sangam Vihar and Munirka areas.
In the past 10 days, 10 cricket betting rackets have been busted and 54 people arrested. A stake money of around Rs 2.5 lakh was also recovered during these raids, the officer said.
