5 killed as SUV plunges into Sutlej River

All the five occupants of an SUV were killed when the vehicle plunged into the turbulent Sutlej River near Chatti in Jagatkhanaa area of Kullu district, about 145 km from here, early this morning.
Police said the vehicle was on its way from Chatti to Jagatkhana, about five kilometres away from the accident spot.
Three bodies have been recovered while frantic searches were on to fish out the remaining two bodies.
The deceased have been identified as Jai Chand (45), his brother Tara Chand (38), Satpal (28), Lucky (20), who was driving the vehicle, and Rajesh (18). The bodies of Jai Chand and Satpal were yet to be recovered.
The recovered bodies were handed over to family members after post-mortem and immediate relief of Rs 10,000 each has been granted to the next of kin of the victims, police said.
Meanwhile in Palampur, a middle-aged woman labourer was killed and 25 others were injured when the truck in which they were going to their work place at Holta, five km from Palampur, skidded off the road.
The victim, a migrant labourer from Jharkhand, was yet to be identified. The cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained and a case has been registered.
