"Fifty SSKs in the state will have full-fledged English medium education which will run side by side with Bengali medium facilities," Bandyopadhyay told PTI on the sidelines of the Teachers' Day function organised by West Bengal Panchayat and Rural Development department here.
The institutions have been chosen considering their infrastructure facilities, she said.
There are 16,100 schools under the state-run SSM in the primary and upper primary (5th-8th standard) segments in panchayat areas of the state, she said.
Education minister Partha Chatterjee had said last week that the state government would introduce English medium education in state-run schools from the primary level where Bengali medium teaching will also continue.
If Bengali and English medium education continue side by side it will contribute to overall improvement in the standard of the institution and meet the aspirations of the students and parents. Besides there is demand for English medium education among parents, he had said.
