50-year-old farmer commits suicide in UP

Apparently upset over damage to his crops due to unseasonal rain and hailstorm, a 50-year-old farmer committed suicide in Hailya village here, police said today.
Raju hanged himself to death last evening in Mursan area following damage to his crops due to unseasonal rain, his family members said.
According to them, Raju had planted wheat crop in about 6 bighas of land owned by his father Malkhan Singh. Apart from this he had also planted wheat in another 16 bighas of farmland obtained on lease.
Yesterday, Raju visited his fields and came back depressed after seeing the heavy loss of crops. His body was later found discovered in the house, the family members said.
State President of the Bhartiya Kisan union (BKU) Harpal Singh who held a dharna at the Tehseel office at Khair said that two other farmers in Tappal and Akrabad had "died of shock" in the past 48 hours following a fresh bout of unseasonal showers.
Prima facie, police confirmed suicide but clear motive behind the act could not be ascertained.
Meanwhile, in Barabanki district another farmer, Hanuman, 50, a resident of Badosarai, died yesterday due to shock after sudden and unexpected crop damage.
His family members claimed that he was upset due to crop loss. However, they did not send his body for post-mortem.
