The government has taken up the matter with the Australian Government at the appropriate level and also through the High Commission of India in Australia, Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor said in a written reply.

Tharoor said the Australian government has announced that the Indian students affected by the closure of these colleges would be able to avail the government's Tuition Protection Scheme (TPS), which seeks to place affected students in an alternate course or refund any unspent pre-paid tuition fees to the students.

Australia recently decided to close down two vocational colleges in Victoria -- The Ashmark Group Pty Ltd and and G Plus G Global Trading Pty Ltd, both in Melbourne -- and one in New South Wales, Ivy Group, the minister said.

To another question, Tharoor said the number of students studying in the USA and Australia in 2012 is 1,00,270 and 36,326 respectively.
