The 52nd martyrdom of Major Shaitan Singh, who laid down his life safeguarding the frontiers of the country during the India-China War in 1962, was observed at his hometown Jodhpur today.
A wreath laying ceremony was organised at his statue at the Paota Circle by Konark Corps.
Major Singh, who was awarded Param Vir Chakra posthumously, was commanding a Rifle Company of the 13th Battalion of Kumaon Regiment deployed at Rezang La in the Chushul Sector at a height of about 17,000 feet.
Notwithstanding the disadvantages of climate, terrain, and weapons, Major Singh and his soldiers went all out to defend Rezang La on November 18, 1962.
His leadership and courage inspired and motivated his men to face the enemy. A ceasefire to the Sino-Indian war was declared by the Chinese Army after this battle.
The solemn occasion was marked by laying of wreaths by Major General A S Chowdhry, General Officer Commanding, Jodhpur sub-area and Brig S Pachory, Station Commander on behalf of Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews, General Officer Commanding Konark Corps.
Family members of Major Shaitan Singh were also present on the occasion.
