57 auditory traffic signals installed for disabled: HC told

Delhi High Court was today informed that 57 auditory traffic signals have been installed in various parts of the national capital to help visually- challenged persons.
A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw was also apprised by Delhi Government Standing counsel Zubeda Begum that maximum number of traffic police personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth flow of vehicles on roads.
"...At present Delhi traffic police has provided 857 traffic signals and 401 traffic blinkers all over Delhi for ensuring smooth flow of traffic and safety of pedestrians and other road users.
"A total of 57 traffic signals have been provided with the auditory devices for the safety of visually handicapped persons," Begum, appearing for Delhi traffic police, said.

The Delhi government response came while hearing of a PIL seeking a direction to install auditory traffic signals on roads to help visually-challenged persons and reserve and provide parking spaces to physically-challenged people near the entrance of a place.
The court also asked East Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation, DDA and NDMC to give their replies.

On reservation of parking space for handicapped, various civic bodies said that direction have been issued "to take necessary action to provide the reserved parking space to physically challenged persons, close to the entrances and also earmark the space with signboards as per the guidelines of Master Plan of Delhi 2021".

South Delhi Municipal Corporation said necessary directions have been issued to the departments to issue proper guidelines as per Building Byelaws to provide a barrier free environment for persons with disabilities.
Meanwhile, traffic police said that they have identified 35 more locations for auditory signals.
