571 industries were not complying with pollution standard

Government today said it has identified 3266 highly polluting industries, including power plants, of which 571 industries were not complying with prescribed standards.
Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said in a written reply in Lok Sabha that out of the total numbers, 2328 industries were complying with prescribed standards.
"The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has identified 3266 highly polluting industries including power plants, of which 2328 industries are complying with prescribed standards, 571 are non-complying and 367 have been closed," Javadekar said.
He said the government has notified 102 industry-specific (effluent 45, emissions 57) environmental standards. All the industries are required to comply with these standards and take pollution control measures under Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution ) Act 1981.
He said that during the last five years (2010 till June 2014), CPCB has issued 601 directions under the Environment Protection Act 1986 which include 497 directios for compliance of standards and 104 directions for closure of defaulting industries.
He said that 138 directions were issued to concerned state pollution control boards and committees under section Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution ) Act 1981 respectively.
"Out of that, 118 directions were for compliance of standards and 20 directions were closure of industries," Javadekar said.
