Six engineers of Delhi Jal Board were today suspended after it was found that water supply to night shelters for homeless people was not made available in their areas.
Officials said six Junior Engineers and Assistant Engineers have been placed under suspension and show-cause notices have been issued to the NGOs managing these night shelters.
The engineers were suspended following instructions from Lt Governor Najeeb Jung. Show-cause notices have also been issued to the NGOs managing 11 night shelters.
Last month, Jung had directed the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), which maintains 181 night shelters across Delhi, to review the availability of water to them.
In its report submitted on May 1, DUSIB said supply of water was not available in 7 night shelters in Taimur Nagar, Neela Gumbad, Vasant Vihar Pahari and areas in and around Sarai Kale Khan.
Delhi Jal Board has also been instructed by the Lt Governor's office to ensure that water is regularly supplied to these night shelters.
"Water is the most critical element in the months of summer, especially for those who are the most vulnerable and have to survive the heat by taking refuge in night shelters. It is our moral duty to ensure that there is regular water supply in these night shelters. There can be no laxity on this front," Jung said.
