Two women were among six members of banned CPI (Maoists) who surrendered to the police in the district today, a top police official said.

Tambelu Lakshmi (20) alias Janaki and Pangi Sheelu (20) alias Latha, of the Pedabayalu Area Committee, gave themselves up, citing 'harsh'treatment by their leadership besides ill-health, distrit Rural SP Rahul Dev Sharma told reporters here.

They were allegedly involved in several crimes, including murder, he said.

The surrendered women said they were "disillusioned" with the Maoist movement and the ideology was not relevant now.

The other four who surrendered were militia members -- M Ramakrishna (30), G Kondababu (26), P Simhachalam (40) and G Ananda Rao (28), the SP said.
