600 structures razed in Thane during anti-encroachment drive

Around 600 illegal structures were demolished during a massive anti-encroachment drive here today, during which hoodlums threw stones at the jeep of a senior civic body official.
Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and the district administration jointly carried out the demolition drive and cleared all encroachments from a four-km stretch at Reti Bunder in Mumbra township.
A release by the civic body said around 350 commercial and 250 residential structures built illegally on the stretch were razed during the operation carried out by 200 workers with the help of JCBs and other equipment.
Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal, District Collector Mahendra Kalyankar and DCP (Zone-I) Abhishek Trimuke supervised the anti-encroachment drive which was initiated in the morning and went on till the evening.
Around 150 police personnel were deployed during the drive, the release said, adding eligible residents displaced by the demolition will be rehabilitated.
During the drive, some hoodlums pelted stones at the jeep of an Assistant Municipal Commissioner and damaged its glasses, said TMC Public Relations Officer Sandeep Malavi.
No one was injured in the stone pelting. A police complaint will be lodged in this regard, Malavi said.
