"49 AK-47 rifles out of a total quantity of 67,500, supplied by Ms Arsenal JSCo Bulgaria, were found defective during joint receipt inspection," Minister of State for Home M Ramachandran said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
"The total cost of 49 defective AK 47 rifles comes to Rs 11.66 lakh and percentage of the defective weapons value was 0.07," he said.
In case of the carbine machine 9mm guns (MX4 Storm), 34,377 pieces along with tools, gauges and spares were ordered by BSF from MS Fabbrica D'Armi Pietro Beretta SpA Italy through global tender, he said.
The "firm had supplied weapons in two consignments. Certain defects were noticed in the barrel of 582 weapons of the first consignment of 17,000 weapons.
"While the cost of this consignment was Euro 1,18,65,733, the cost for the set of defective 582 (defects in barrel only) weapons was Euro 2,90,022.24," he said.
The government, the minister said, has taken action.
Ramachandran said that while in the case of AK 47 weapons the amount was proportionately deducted from total cost of supply order, in the case of carbine machine guns, the firm has been directed to replace the weapons at the earliest.
