The scholarship scheme for the students of Jammu and Kashmir was formulated by the Human Resource Development Ministry to enable them to pursue higher studies and various professional courses outside the state.

Addressing the students at a function organised by Jammu and Kashmir Peace Foundation at SKICC here today, Governor N N Vohra stressed on creating awareness among the students of the state about the scheme so that a maximum number of them could benefit from it.

"It is the responsibility of all the stakeholders to draw the maximum possible advantage of this scheme," he said.

The Governor called for setting up an 'Overview Committee', to meet twice a year for reviewing and monitoring the implementation of the scheme.

The Governor observed that militancy had caused a serious set back to the education sector.

Following the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Jammu and Kashmir in 2010, an expert group had been set up to formulate a scheme to help the students of the State in pursuing education in various educational institutions in the country.

This scholarship scheme was launched after acceptance of the expert group's recommendations to the Prime Minister.
