"We do not have sufficient number of sub inspectors and constables in Assam Police. We are hiring 2,400 people soon. The in the next phase another 5,000 people will be hired," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said.
It is the state government's plan is to make the police force best in the country, he said replying on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the home portfolio, during the discussion on cut motion.
"As per UN norms, there should be one policeman against 400 civilians. Assam is nowhere near this figure. Sarbananda Sonowal is trying for that, but this cannot be done in six months or one year. It has to be done systematically over a period of time," Patowary said.
"I salute the Assam Police for its fight to bring peace in the state. That is why Congress could rule peacefully for 15 years. I think Tarun Gogoi was a lucky CM, not Sarbananda Sonowal," Patowary said.
He also reiterated the government's commitement to seal the international border between India and Bangladesh.
