75 per cent voting in Guj panchayat polls

"As per the information received, an average 75 per cent voting has been registered for 1,161 village panchayats in 22 districts which went to poll today," Incharge state election commissioner P S Shah said.

Counting is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

The elections were not fought on the symbols of political parties.

The State Election Commission had last month issued a notification for the election to 1,447 Panchayats as their term was about to end in February.

As candidates in 286 Panchayats were declared elected unopposed, polling for 1,161 panchayats was held today in 22 districts of the state.

"Polling was held in a peaceful manner and no untoward incident was registered," Shah said, adding around 75 per cent of the 19.87 lakh voters exercised their franchise.

"A candidate from ward number 3 of Aniyari village in Okha, Jamnagar died today," he said.

Meanwhile, polling for 76 Municipalities is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.
