77 cases of crime against children in observation homes in 4

Seventy seven cases of crime against children, including abuse, sexual exploitation and ill-treatment, have been reported in observation homes across the country in the past four years, Lok Sabha was told today.
"The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has reported that it has registered 77 complaints/cases concerning child abuse, sexual exploitation, torture, ill-treatment, disappearance, running away of children, lack of residential facilities and other irregularities committed in child care institutions including observation and special homes across the country" in four years, government said.
Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, in a written reply, said the Ministry is implementing Integrated Child Protection Scheme under which financial assistance is provided to states and Union Territories for setting up and maintaining various childcare institutions including observation homes, special homes either by themselves or through NGOs.
Various rehabilitation and re-integration measures, including vocational training, counselling and non-formal education, are provided in these childcare institutions.
