Out of these 770 shelters, 270 are in operation in nine states, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Babul Supriyo said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
Among all the centrally-assisted shelters, Madhya Pradesh leads with 133 of them, followed by Tamil Nadu 95, Rajasthan 87, Uttar Pradesh 72, West Bengal 50, Bihar 48, Telangana 41, Jharkhand 35, Mizoram 35 and Andhra Pradesh 31.
Under the scheme, construction of a total of 358 new shelters has been sanctioned, besides refurbishment of 149 and another 263 shelters are being helped with operation and maintenance support in 20 states.
Under NULM, which was renamed as 'Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-NULM' last week, an expenditure of Rs 77.36 crore has been incurred on sheltering urban homeless since the financial year 2014-15.
