Acting on a tip-off, a team of Government Railway Police (GRP) intercepted the passenger, Devang Shah, who was travelling by Howrah-Mumbai Jnaneswari Express, at around 10.15 last night here, they said.
On searching, the team found that Shah had hidden 8 kgs of gold, valued at around Rs 2.16 crore based on current price, in his jacket, said Inspector Vasudev Desale.
The team got into the train at Bhusawal station and traced Shah, a resident of Nalasopara, a distant suburb of Mumbai, who claims to be employed with a jeweller.
Shah said he works for a jeweller in Mumbai, Bharat Jain, and claimed the gold belonged to the latter. However, he did not have any documents to prove his claim, Desale added.
