80 people pledged to donate their eyes at a free eye Camp organised at a village in Rajokri today.
More than 400 people attended the camp and got themselves checked by specialist doctors and were provided free medicines for their eye ailments, while those detected with cataract were registered for free corrective operations to be conducted subsequently.
The camp was organised by Mahindru Foundation and Niramaya Charitable Trust.
"To donate eyes is the most noble gesture a human being can do for a fellow human being. This is the message we try and convey at such camps because people tend to be ignorant about eye care until andunless faced with a major ailment," said Ashok Mahindru, son of Yashpal Mahindru, who founded the YP Mahindru Niramaya Eye Bank many years ago.
India is home to more than 2.5 million of the world's corneal blind but the actual number of eye donation is a meagre 30000 to 40000 per year. The huge gap can be brought down significantly by creating awareness and through higher eye donations.
