941 foreigners avail VoA facility in July

Government has extended VoA facility to 11 countries to facilitate hassle-free tourist movement into the country.

The maximum number of tourists availing the facility were from Japan (247) followed by Indonesia (167), New Zealand (161) and Philippines (149), according to a Tourism Ministry data. Only four from Cambodia and one from Laos came to India in July.

The Incredible India campaign has attracted a total of 5.25 lakh tourists to the country in July.

As a facilitative measure to attract more foreign tourists to India, government launched the scheme of Visa on Arrival in January 2010 for citizens of five countries - Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore - visiting India for tourism purposes.

The scheme was extended a year later to six more countries - Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos and Myanmar.

The Ministry is seeking extension of the VoA scheme to a few more countries to increase tourist traffic in the country.

A total number of 7662 VoAs were issued during January-July 2012 as compared to 6594 VoAs during corresponding period of 2011 registering a positive growth of 16.2 per cent.
