His long wait for a donor is finally over. 21-year-old Kishore will be one among the many who will be able to smile when the entire world celebrates 'World Kidney Day' tomorrow.
Kishor will undergo kidney transplant soon at AIIMS, with a friend of his offering one of his kidneys. His parents were medically unfit to donate their kidneys.
Kishor (name changed) is suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) which has emerged as a major challenge for doctors in the country.
AIIMS has witnessed almost 20 per cent increase in patients seeking kidney treatment at the OPD of the Institute over the past two years, with 90 per cent of them coming with various degree of CKD.
As per a study by AIIMS, approximately 1.50 lakh new kidney patients are added to the existing lot every year out of which only few are able to get some form of treatment.
According to Dr Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Head of Department of Nephrology in AIIMS, CKD is more common in India than stroke and heart attack and almost equal in magnitude to diabetes mellitus.

Also, the cost of treatment of a CKD patient is much more than stroke, heart attack, diabetes and high blood pressure.
"Two most common causes of CKD are diabetes and high blood pressure which constitute nearly 60 per cent of all patients of CKD. Currently, 100-105 million adult Indian population are suffering from CKD and five lakh require life-long dialysis or kidney transplant every year," said Dr Agarwal.
For detecting CKD, two very simple tests are required, which include protein in urine and a blood test for serum creatinine. These need to be done once in a year and does not cost more than Rs 100 and are possible in any lab.
