As the opposition is gearing up to put up a united fight against the Narendra Modi dispensation, the race to name its leader has also begun.
"It is only natural that someone with impeccable credentials should play a lead role in 2019," O'Brien told PTI.
A TMC leader, on condition of anonymity, said they felt that even though every opposition party would like their party chief to lead the opposition camp, the prospective leader "must have the experience of being the chief minister of a state and Union minister".
The leader said the Congress was keen to invite Mamata Banerjee for the opposition meet scheduled for February 1 called by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, but was told by the TMC that Banerjee would not be available till February 20 due to prior commitments.
Instead of Banerjee, TMC leaders Derek O'Brien and Sudip Bandyopadhyay will be attending the meet.
Though Banerjee shares a very close relation with Gandhi, news of her absence in the meet has raised eyebrows in the political circle.
