Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lt Gen (Retd) AK Singh, today urged the people of the Union Territory to take part in the government's development programmes.
Greeting the islanders on the 65th Republic Day, Singh urged them to dedicate themselves to the cause of freedom, unity and solidarity.
He payed homage to the freedom fighters and martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice to safeguard the country.
He said that the culture of the UT was "unique" and added that, "This is our strength and we shall not disturb the harmony prevailing in the islands."
He hoisted the national flag and distributed commemoration certificates and cash awards to 13 people and organisations.
In a broadcast yesterday, Singh had said that the major challenges facing the UT were related to creating more employment opportunities for the youth, improving connectivity with the mainland and ensuring strategic security.
