The All Assam Gorkha Students' Union (AAGSU), the influential apex students and youth organization of Gorkhas of Assam, today demanded 15 Gorkha dominated Assembly constituencies in the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections.
"Any political party which gives Gorkha candidature in the following constituencies of Margheritha, Digboi, Sadiya, Sootea, Nawboicha, Bihali, Borsola, Mazbat, Tamulpur, Sarupathar, Duliajan, Tezpur, Tingkhang, Rangapara, and Gohpur will get support from AAGSU and the Gorkhas of the state," AAGSU President Prem Tamang told reporters here today.
"Besides these Gorkha-dominated constituencies, 35 lakhs scattered Gorkhas are the deciding factor in 65 constituencies of the state and AAGSU will take a stand in this election for Gorkha Autonomus Council," he asserted.
"Gorkhas previously had two cabinet ministers and four MLAs in the Assam Assembly and currently two MLAs and one Parliamentary Secretary in the state government," Tamang added.
AAGSU Central Executive Member (CEM) Nanda Kirati Dewan said the organisation's central executive and Extended Executive Meetings on Monday and Tuesday decided on the political stand of Gorkhas of state and unanimously resolved to demand Gorkha candidature in 15 constituencies in Assam.
"Gorkhas of Assam won't vote for any Party but for Gorkha candidates across the state, any political party putting up Gorkha candidate will get AAGSU support in that constituency," Dewan asserted.
AAGSU reiterated its stand on up-gradation of the National Register of Citizens and ongoing verification that no genuine Indian Gorkha who has applied for inclusion in NRC should be left out under any circumstances, he said.
