Airports Authority of India is working on a plan to set up a new domestic and international cargo complex at the Pune airport.
In a letter to Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, who hails from Pune, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said an area measuring 2213 square metres was provided for construction of domestic and international air cargo terminal with the threshold area of 1000 sqm each.
"AAI is in process of preparation of relevant drawings/ layout plan for proposed international/domestic Air Cargo Complex facility at Pune airport," he said.
With regard to setting up of independent international airport in the region, the Minister said it is informed that AAI has undertaken a preliminary feasibility study of proposed site for upcoming Greenfield Airport at KHED (Pune).
"The Government of Maharashtra has given in-principle approval for the site at KHED. MADC (Maharashtra Airport Development Company) is in the process of developing the master plan for the airport, including the land requirement fasibility," Raju said.
Earlier, Javadekar had forwarded a memorandum from Maharatta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture to Raju in which it had requested for a direct flight between Pune and Singapore and setting-up of an independent International Airport in Pune.
On the demand, Raju said while Indian carriers are free to mount services from any point in India, including Pune, to international destinations available under bilateral agreements, foreign airlines can operate only on designated points of call available under the bilateral agreements.
"Pune is not available as point of call to the designated carrier of Singapore," the Minister said.
