The AAP brass today convened at party leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence to discuss recent developments like the controversy over Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar's degree and a farmer's alleged suicide at a party rally.
At a hurriedly called meeting, the AAP leaders went into a huddle in the afternoon which lasted for more than two hours.
Although the party denied that it was a meeting of its Political Affairs Committee, members of the top body, including Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Kumar Vishwas, Gopal Rai, Ilias Azmi, Pankaj Gupta were present for the discussions.
According to sources, the party sought a clarification from Azmi for his purported comments on Tomar.
"He (Azmi) denied that he had sought Tomar's resignation. The media twisted his remarks in which he simply said that those demanding Tomar's resignation should also ask HRD Minister Smriti Irani to step down," they said.
Apart from the PAC members, senior leaders Ashutosh and Deepak Bajpai were also present. However, they maintained that it was a "routine meet" and nothing "significant" was discussed.
"The party will continue to back Tomar as long as the case is sub-judice. There was a communication gap and that was discussed," a senior leader said.
AAP has come under considerable pressure from opposition parties like BJP and Congress who have demanded Tomar's resignation after he was embroiled in a court case for allegedly possessing a fake law degree.
