Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today hit out at Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh over his claim of championing the cause of river waters, alleging he was actually the "prime architect and largely responsible for its loot".
"Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal was the biggest conspiracy to loot Punjab waters and Congress leaders Indira Gandhi, Darbara Singh and Amarinder were partners in crime in this," AAP spokesperson Himmat Singh Shergill said.
Most of the construction of SYL in Punjab territory was completed under the Akali Dal Government led by Surjit Singh Barnala in which Amarinder Singh was the state Agriculture Minister, he said.
"So, while being the Agriculture Minister of Punjab, Amarinder completely ignored the state's interest on river waters and it was during this time the construction work of the SYL was in full swing," Shergill said.
When Indira Gandhi laid the foundation stone of SYL on April 8 in 1982 at Kapoori village in Patiala, Amarinder, who was the local Congress MP, was standing shoulder to shoulder with her during the entire ceremony, the AAP spokesperson said.
In 2004, when Punjab Termination of Agreement Act was passed in the Assembly, UPA Government got the matter sent for reference to Supreme Court. Despite this, Amarinder continued to stay put as the Chief Minister, he said.
"Now, in 2016, he continues to enjoy close confidence of Sonia Gandhi and was even rewarded for his loyalty with the post of Punjab Congress chief and is being projected as the next Chief Minister," Shergill said.
In the Supreme Court, Modi Government is trying its best so that Punjab waters is given to Haryana. Prima facie this is Centre's conspiracy to loot the waters of Punjab. Still Parkash Singh Badal's Akali Dal is continuing its alliance with BJP, at the centre and in the state, he alleged.
