The sister-in-law of former Delhi Minister and AAP MLA Rakhi Bidlan went to police with a domestic violence complaint only to later withdraw it even as the matter was taken up by opposition leaders for launching an attack on the ruling party.

According to police, the woman, identified as Priyanka, reached outer Delhi's Rohini (south) police station last night where she complained that Rakhi's brother, Vikram Bidlan, had assaulted her and beaten her with a belt.

However, by afternoon today she had decided to withdraw the complaint. "But if these things are repeated in the future, I will approach court," she said today.

Police did not file an FIR in this connection following the U-turn. The woman had last night told reporters outside the police station, "Nobody wants her marriage to fail. I have two children but incidents of physical violence have gone up in the last two months. I filed a complaint because I can't take it anymore."

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), Vikramjeet Singh, said, "After she filed a complaint, a woman Sub Inspector and a constable accompanied her to her residence and counselled her family. We have been told that the woman is withdrawing her complaint."

Meanwhile, when contacted, the MLA washed her hands of the controversy while claiming that she was with the victim.

"I have nothing to do with this dispute. I have nothing to do with my family and my two brothers. Whoever is guilty should be punished and I am with the woman," said Bidlan.

Congress and BJP, however, latched on to the issue to launch an attack on Bidlan, a former Delhi Women and Child Development Minister, and the AAP government.

Terming the incident "shameful", Congress said that the matter should be taken up by the women's commission.

"We also appeal to the MLA to not stop proper action against her brother. It is shameful that such a thing has happened in her family," said Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee leader Sharmistha Mukherjee.

Delhi BJP Chief Satish Upadhyay said, "It is surprising that the Chief Minister wants to assign Women and Child Welfare Departments to such MLA.
