Police said the incident took place at about 9 pm yesterday, when Jagannath (26), who was brought to the police station in connection with the kidnapping of a girl, was trying to escape from clutches of policemen.
The deceased used to give tuition to local students and was resident of JJ clusters in Okhla.
Jagannath also tutored a girl from his neighbourhood. The girl had got late in returning home after tuitions yesterday. When Jagannath's father Ram Babu Shah arrived home, the father-son duo went to drop her at her house nearby.
According to police, girl's family members dialed 100 and informed the police alleging that they had abducted their daughter.

A PCR van arrived at the spot and girl's family handed over them to the cops, who brought the two to the Okhla police station for further interrogation.
"At about 9 pm, Jagannath somehow managed to give a slip to police and ran outside the police station and while escaping, he was hit by a speeding dumper," police said.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Jagannath's family members gathered outside the police station and alleged that he and his father were beaten up by the girl's family members even inside the station in front of the cops.
Family members and locals staged a protest and pelted stones on the police station. Some DTC buses were also damaged in the incident. Senior police officers pacified the mob and assured fair investigation in the case.
"We are trying to trace the girl's family members to know the exact sequence of the incident," a senior official said.
"Once a person is detained or arrested, it is responsibility of police to ensure his/her safety and security," the officer added.
