An eight-member delegation including eminent academicians today met President Pranab Mukherjee and sought his intervention to stop the implementation of the four-year undergraduate programme in Delhi University.
The delegation, which included historian Romila Thapar, sociologist Krishan Kumar and social activist Shabnam Hashmi, submitted a memorandum in this regard to Mukherjee and also highlighted the provisions under the Delhi University Act under which the President as the Visitor of the university could intervene into the matter.
The delegation raised the various shortcomings of the four-year programme and underlined the need for a national debate on it before implementation, a statement issued here said.
"Roughly 60,000 students will take admission in Delhi University this year. It would be highly irresponsible to subject these young lives to an experiment that is so flawed.
The obstinacy of the DU administration and its refusal to reconsider the decision cannot be understood or appreciated," the memorandum stated.
The new four-year structure will be a shift from the present 10+2+3 scheme and entails awarding a diploma if a student exits after two years, a bachelor's degree after three years and a bachelor's degree with honours or a B Tech degree on completion of four years.
The admission process under the scheme of FYUP is currently in progress with tomorrow being the last date for submission of admission forms.
The first cut-off will be declared on June 27.
