ACB raids sales tax official and unearths illegal properties

Kalyan division Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax Ramesh Bhagoji Jaid, who was arrested for graft last evening was produced in court which remanded him to police custody until May 5, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sources said here today.
In an official release issued today evening, the ACB said that raids were conducted at various locations where several properties were unearthed in the name of his wife and other relatives.
The release said that there were five flats in the name of his wife, daughter, son-in-law and his brother, in Dombivili, Dadar, Kharghar and Pune.
Besides these properties, his wife and nephew had five shops in Kharghar, Badlapur and Pune, the raids revealed. His wife also had a partnership in a computer education firm, while both she and his relatives had partnership in a construction firm called Gurukripa Developers.
The total investment by his wife and relatives in the construction firm was worth Rs 1,40,60,000 the release stated.
Cash held in various bank accounts to the tune of Rs 1.50 lakh, in the official name was also unearthed.

The official also had two cars -- one on his name and another in his son-in-law's name, the ACB said.
Jaid was arrested when he accepted a bribe amount of Rs 5 lakh from an industrialist for favouring him during tax assessement.
Initially, Kalyan's Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax Jaid had demanded Rs 98,43,754 from the company as sales tax.
Allegedly, Jaid had demanded a bribe of Rs 50,00,000, in order to avoid taking action against the company. After due deliberations, it was agreed that a sum of Rs 20,00,000 would be paid to the official for the favour.
