CPI(M) today condoled the death of the Park Street, Kolkata, rape victim who was brutalised inside a moving car in February 2012 and said it is "incumbent" on West Bengal government to ensure that the accused are punished.
"West Bengal government and the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had caused the victim further trauma by the callous statements that her complaint was manufactured to defame the state government.
"Mamata Bannerjee refused to apologise even after the police investigation subsequently substantiated the victim's charge of rape. With her death, it is incumbent on West Bengal government to ensure that the accused are punished. The struggle to get justice for the woman must continue," the party said.
"The government should also take appropriate measures to support and help the victim's school-going children as she was the only breadwinner in the family," CPI(M) said.
