Act against illegal constructions in T Nagar: HC to govt

The Madras High Court has ordered the city civic authorities to take appropriate action against illegal constructions in T-Nagar area and submit its action- taken-report by July 28.
A bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar issued the directions in the wake of the May 31 fire that had gutted a leading textile, allegedly built illegally in in the area.
The bench issued the directions taking suo motu note of the illegal and unauthorised constrictions in the area and sought explanations of the Housing and Urban Development Department's secretary, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority's chief, Chenani Corporation's commissioner and Greater Chennai's police commissioner on the illegal growth of the area.
The bench also made the Fire and Rescue Services director as party to the issue.
It directed all authorities to file their reports and posted the matter for July 28.
The bench of erstwhile Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul had on October 7, 2016 had emphasised the importance of framing rules under Section 113 C of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971.
The erstwhile CJ Kaul had also observed that though the Justice S Rajeswaran Committee had formulated and made recommendations on the issue, the rules were yet to be framed under the Act.
The May 31 fire on busy Usman Raod building in the area had gutted the leading textile showroom Chennai Silks in it. Twelve persons were rescued that day from the seven storied building.
