Alleging it to be an attempt to hurt religious sentiments of Sikhs, three city-based persons petitioned the police commissioner here today seeking action against BJP leader Arun Jaitley and an Akali leader Bikram Singh for using 'Shabad-Kirtan' for political purposes.
"Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia has modified Sikh community's Shabad Kirtan to praise BJP's Amritsar Lok Sabha candidate Arun Jaitley, which hurt our religious sentiments," a petitioner Manmeetsingh Chhabra told PTI.
Manmeetsingh Chhabra, Satnamsingh Dang and Gurudevsingh Saluja sought action against the BJP leader since he was also present at the Amritsar election meeting, when the Akali leader recited 'Kirtan' praising him.
"Shabad Kirtan is recited by Sikh community members and by some of Indian army regiments for sacred purposes. Using it for political gain or praising an individual cannot be tolerated," the petition said.
The petitioners' advocate also claimed that if the police does not take proper action, they would file a petition before the High Court.
"We have given the petition to the city police commissioner. It should be sent to the concerned police station in Punjab. If proper action is not be taken, then we will approach the state High Court," Advocate Kishore Paul told PTI.
The petition has demanded action under Section 295(a) for deliberately outraging religious feelings and Section 298 of the Indian Penal Code for uttering words with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings of any person.
