Activists in Goa have joined hands to demand that the BJP-led state government clean the capital city's rivulet on the lines of Ganga cleaning mission.
Goa For Giving Trust (GFGT), an NGO, which brought environmentalists like Claude Alvares, who successfully petitioned Supreme Court against the state's illegal mining and social activist Oscar Rebello, on the same platform, has demanded that the state government must clean St Inez Creek rivulet.
GFGT president Armando Gonsalves said if BJP government at the Centre could work towards cleaning up the Ganga, a similar initiative ought to be taken up to clean the St Inez creek, which is causing severe health problems to those living around it.
He recalled that Goa government has already received funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme to clean up the creek, but is yet to spend it.
Alvares said the creek could be developed as a tourist spot.
