The city of Manna Dey's 'Bhajphori Manna', having the most varied ranges of street food, had another first with the ubiquitous 'egg and chicken roll' getting a logo and brand.
P C Sorcar's magiaian-actgr daughter Mumtaj Sorcar said, "As a quintessential Kolkatan, who loves to gorge into any kind of street food - from yummy phuchka to hot kathi rolls and chowmein - this is one step forward to have a benchmark."
"This gels well with the city metamorphed into a entertainment and lifestyle hub in the east, whose fabled street food has been featured in national and international channels," the Bhooter Bhabisyot actor said about Kolkata's rolls now globally branded as the "Gr8! Rolls N Wraps."
She wished there were more documented works and features themed on Kolkata's food culture, including street cuisine.
"Kolkata's iconic food song Ami Sri Sri Bhajohori Manna encapsulates the city's appetite for sizzlers to sweets.
I would also expect one day the 'Bharer Cha' (city's unique tradition to serve tea in typical earthen pots) will be similarly bracketed as an international label," contemporary poet-lyricist-singer-romanticist Joy Sarkar said.
Neha Sharma, spearhead of the initiative to branding 'typical street joint rolls', said, "For Kolkatans who swear by rolls to the foreign customers our motto is to bring this type of food to a common standard using less oil.
"Besides serving in select eateries the branded variety we implore hawkers here and in district towns and other parts of Bengal not to use too much oil, follow certain basic norms and shun any artificial preservatives," she said.
