The Goa government today said export of mining ore has been capped to 45 million tonnes annually through a policy decision but actual exports would be only limited to 30 million tonnes due to the carrying capacity of the roads in the state.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the state legislative assembly that the state mining policy has capped the export of iron ore from Goa to 45 million tonnes, of which 20 million tonnes would be freshly extracted.
"I realised that the maximum carrying capacity of Goa's roads is around 40-45 million tonnes," Parrikar said.
"Even if we allow 45 million tonnes ore to be exported (after the SC ban is lifted), the actual would be just 30 million tonnes considering the local situations like road carrying capacity," he added.
He said even with 45 million tonnes of annual export, the state would be able to sustain the mining industry for the next 30 years.
The Chief Minister said there are approximately 750 million tonnes of ore piled up in the form of low grade dumps (rejected ore), which has now gained value in international markets.
Parrikar said export from Goa was hardly 22 million tonnes in 2003, which went up to 26 MT in 2006 and then soared to 53 MT in 2010, bringing to light the entire illegal mining mess.
