The Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL), a subsidiary of Adani Power Limited, has signed a concession agreement with New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) for additional 4.99 hectares in the NMPT premises to enable the UPCL's project expansion.
UPCL currently operates two 600 MW thermal power plants at Yellur village in Udupi district.
NMPT chairman-in-charge Suresh P Shirwadkar and Adani UPCL joint president Kishore Alva signed the agreement here on June 15, a release here said today.
Speaking on the occasion, Shirwadkar said the execution of the concession agreement with UPCL would facilitate NMPT in experiencing good traffic in cargo handling at the port in the coming days.
Kishore Alva said the UPCL had in May 2008 entered into a 30-year concession agreement with NMPT for 15 hectares for setting up a bulk coal terminal.
This involved the construction and operation of a captive jetty with associated facilities required for handling bulk quantities of coal.

The additional land was required to handle additional cargo for UPCLs proposed project expansion.
The UPCL had developed a mechanised coal handling system consisting of two ship unloaders and installed a three km long conveyor system, enabling handling 3,300 tonnes of coal per hour.
The facility also included rapid loading system to load coal onto rail wagons at a speed of one wagon per minute on a 3.6-km railway siding, he said.
