Aeroflot to pay Rs 83K to woman for denying permission to fly

The Russian federation airline, one of the oldest in the world, had stopped the woamn from taking the flight saying she had not produced the invitation letter from Italian embassy.

The New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum said Aeroflot did not allow the woman to board despite there being no impediment from immigration authorities.

It added the airline "contested the case for four years without any sufficient legal basis and harassed complainant."

"Holding opposite party (Aeroflot) guilty of deficiency in service, we direct it to refund Rs 20,000 (cost of the cancelled return ticket)and cancellation charges of Rs 13,500.

"Aeroflot is clearly guilty of holding departure despite valid VISA with her... We also award damages inclusive of litigation cost to the tune of Rs 50,000," the bench presided by C K Chaturvedi said.

In her complaint, Punjab native Raj Rani had said she had booked Aeroflot tickets for Delhi to Milan flight via Moscow on August 24, 2008 but she was denied boarding pass at New Delhi airport despite having a valid VISA on alleged ground that she was not carrying the invitation letter from the Italian Embassy.

She had added that Aeroflot had not informed her about this requirement when she had booked the tickets.

Thereafter, she had stayed back and had produced the invitation letter, subsequent to which only the airline had allowed her to fly to Milan on August 31, 2008, she had said.

The airline also did not refund the cost of her return ticket which had been cancelled as her trip had to be postponed, she had added.
